Ohio Spill Response and Reporting

What types of spills must be reported?

Petroleum
On land: must be reported if 25 gallons or more is spilled or released

On water: must be reported if there is any visible sheen if spilled or released on Waters of the State of Ohio, or if there is a potential for entry into the Waters of the State.

Chemicals
See table on 40 CFR 302.4, 355, Appendix A and determine Reportable Quantity (RQ)

When should a spill be reported?

Within 30 Minutes: Regardless of origin, all spills in Ohio must be verbally reported to the following agencies:

  • Ohio EPA (1-800-282-9378)
  • Local Fire Department (911)
  • LEPC (Local Emergency Planning Committee) (Varies by County)
  • NRC (National Response Center) (1-800-424-8802)

Earliest Practical Moment: All transportation-related spills and releases must be reported to the following agencies:

  • Department of Transportation (1-800-424-8802)
  • Ohio EPA (1-800-282-9378)
  • Local Fire Department (911)
  • Local Law Enforcement (911)
  • LEPC (Varies by County)
  • NRC (If applicable) (1-800-424-8802)

Within 30 Days: For all incidents described above, a written report using the appropriate forms must be filed within 30 days from the spill or release date. Additional information related to the spill or release must be reported as soon as possible following the 30-day follow-up report.
